About

This web site is privately maintained and offered as a technical resource for others who share the interests of the site owner. A substantial part of the material published here has been imported from the knowledgebase/wiki site provided by Smartvox Limited. That site offered a free knowledge resource for VoIP Service Providers, focused primarily on an open source product called OpenSIPS. This new web site reflects a broader range of topics and interests beyond VoIP and SIP. It includes articles that reflect my renewed interest in electronics and microcontrollers. It will also include topics related to Linux System Administration and IT.

Some history

Smartvox UK was originally a limited company, first established in 2004. Its main focus was the design and provision of OpenSIPS solutions for ITSP’s. It provided solutions based on OpenSIPS and rtpengine allowing its customers to secure the network-edge without incurring the high cost of commercial SBCs. It is no longer registered as a limited company.

The work at Smartvox primarily focussed on VoIP and SIP, especially versions of OpenSIPS up to v3.1. Working in this arena also required in-depth knowledge of Linux system administration and a good working knowledge of many other applications including Asterisk, Kamailio, MySQL, Teams, fail2ban, Docker, Pacemaker, Homer, FreeSWITCH, LetsEncrypt, iptables, bash scripts etc. – all running on various Linux distros. Many of the articles here, which are original material mostly derived from internal research projects, reflect these topics.

The owner, John, retired in 2022 and Smartvox Limited was dissolved in 2024. Any commercial activities, including the operation of this web site, are now undertaken as a sole trader operating under the tradename ‘Smartvox UK’. It is very unlikely that any new projects for third parties will be considered. However, the articles on this web site will remain available for an indefinite period. Furthermore, it is planned that new articles will be posted here from time to time. These will generally reflect a wider range of subjects beyond VoIP and SIP. My new interests include electronics, especially using programmable controllers like the Arduino.
